SIMPLE KITCHEN IDEAS
Citrus salt rims, a mocktail & a cocktail
Make a delicate half-rim, then choose a sparkling orange-lime mocktail or a classic lime cocktail.

FOLLOW THE PROCESS
See how it comes together

Gather the ingredients
Prepare citrus, a saucer of small salt grains and clean glasses before mixing the drink.

Coat the outside half-rim
Moisten the outer edge with lime, roll it lightly in salt and tap away loose grains.

Fill & serve
Add ice and your chosen drink without disturbing the rim. Use the mocktail or cocktail quantities below.
Follow the detailed instructions below for quantities and timing.
Ingredients
- 1 tablespoon fine pink salt or finely crushed food-grade sea salt, for the rim (most remains on the saucer)
- 1 lime wedge, plus extra wedges for serving
- Ice, for two glasses
- Mocktail: 120 ml orange juice, 30 ml lime juice, 180 ml chilled sparkling water; optional 10–20 ml simple syrup
- Cocktail alternative, adults only: 90 ml tequila, 45 ml orange liqueur, 45 ml lime juice; optional 10 ml agave syrup
Method
- Prepare the salt. Spread a thin layer on a small saucer. Crush coarse crystals to a comfortable small grain; remove oversized pieces.
- Make a half-rim. Rub the lime wedge around the outside of half of each glass rim. Keep juice away from the inner edge so excess salt does not fall into the drink.
- Coat lightly. Roll the moistened edge in the salt rather than pushing the whole glass into it. Tap off loose grains and let the rim set while preparing the drink.
- For the mocktail: stir orange juice, lime juice and optional syrup together. Divide between the two ice-filled glasses, pouring clear of the rim. Top each with half the sparkling water and stir gently.
- For the cocktail alternative: shake tequila, orange liqueur, lime juice and optional agave with ice. Strain equally into the two prepared glasses over fresh ice. Do not add the mocktail ingredients.
- Serve immediately with a lime wedge. Keeping half the rim plain lets each person choose a salted or unsalted sip.
Choose one drink variation, not both in the same glass. The tablespoon of rim salt is preparation material, not the amount consumed. Discard salt left on the wet saucer.
Make it work in your kitchen
Rim falls off
Use a thin film of citrus, not a dripping wet edge, and coat just before serving.
Drink tastes too salty
Coat only the outside half-rim and tap away loose grains. Do not stir leftover rim salt into the drink.
Make ahead
Prepare the juice mixture ahead and refrigerate. Add ice, rims and sparkling water at serving time.
Cooking times are approximate. Check texture and doneness as you cook, and adjust seasoning to taste.
Choose your salt
